機床所主要從事高效精密立臥式加工中心、高精度數控車床、超精密數控機床與專機、特種加工機床（數控電加工機床、精密激光加工設備）、關鍵功能部件(滾珠絲杠副等) 、精密測試儀器設備、氣動液壓產品等的研發與生產，多年來以高精、高速、高效和智能化的技術與產品服務于我國制造業。
機床所擁有國家超精密機床工程技術研究中心、精密超精密加工國家工程研究中心、機械工業柔制造工程研究中心、機械工業精密制造工程研究中心和機械工業數控機床能測試評價與可靠重點實驗室，開展行業共技術、關鍵技術的研究。是中國機床工具工業協會副理事長單位；全國金屬切削機床標準化技術委員會秘書處、全國工業機械電氣系統標準化技術委員會秘書處、中國機械工程學會生產工程學會秘書處、全國自動化系統與集成標準化技術委員會物理設備控制（數控）分技術委員會秘書處等也設立在本所。擁有的中文核心期刊《制造技術與機床》創刊于1951年，是我國機械工業發行量最大、影響面最廣的刊物之一。
Beijing Machine Tool Research Institute Co.,Ltd.(BMTRI) is a comprehensive scientific research institute inmachine tool industry in china which was established in 1956. BMTRI has the National Ultra-Precision Machine Tool Engineering Technology Research Center, the National Engineering Research Center for precision & ultra-precision machining, Flexible Manufacturing Engineering Research Center of Machinery Industry, Machinery Industry Engineering Research Center for Precision Manufacturing and Mechanical Industries CNC machine tool performance test evaluation and reliability laboratory to carry out the research on industrial common technologies and key technology.
Our institute is a vice-president unit of the China Machine Tool & Tool Builders' Association;The National Metal Cutting Standardization Technical Committee Secretariat, the National Industrial Machinery Electrical System Standardization Technical Committee Secretariat, the Secretariat of the Production Engineering institution of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society the Secretariat of Physical Device Control (CNC) Branch of National Automation Systems and Integrated Standardization Technical Committeearealso set upin our institute.
We have Chinese core journal named MANUFACTURING TECHNELOGY & MACHINE TOOL which was first published in 1951,which is one ofthe journals with the largest circulation and the most widespread impact in machinery industry.
